City health office warns public vs summer diseases

By Merlito G. Edale Jr.

The City Health Office here has warned the public of the prevalence of common diseases and health hazards during the summer months.

Dr. Genaro Manalo, city health officer, urged the public to observe precautionary measures against summer diseases and its prevention to fully enjoy the summer days with activities or scheduled travels.

He said among the leading diseases during summer season are hypertension and heat stroke, measles, sore eyes, sunburn, cough and colds, diarrhea and dog bites.

To prevent the ill-effects of too much sun exposure, he advised the public to time their outdoor activities.

“Outdoor activities must be done in the early morning or late afternoon,” he added.

Manalo also recommended not to stay under the sun too long and should drink 8-12 glasses of water daily to avoid heat stroke.

“Be cautious of eating contaminated foods or drinks. Food spoils easily during hot summer months,” the city health officer added.

He also advised pet owners to ensure their dogs are vaccinated against rabies.

“Dog bites can lead to rabies if wound are not washed and cared for. If you sustain dog bites, visit the nearest dog bite center to have shots of anti-rabies vaccine,” he said.
